Jewellery business - five websites to help with selling

This is an edited reblog of a post I wrote for the London Jewellery School blog This time of year you should be gearing up for some bumper sales for your jewellery business but it can be difficult to find advice and resources if you are working for yourself. I've put together some of my favourite online resources for you in a series of blog posts. In the first of this series, five sites for help with sales and selling Benchpeg Keeping up to date with what is happening in the jewellery industry is important and Benchpeg is the best way to do this. Sign up for their newsletter and you’ll get a summary of the news from the industry every week. This includes job vacancies and links to where jewellery stories have been featured in the media. Design Trust The Design Trust is a fantastic site in it’s own right but I love the advice column from the Design Doctor . Look through the questions to find just the advice that you need too! Innovative earring design - front and back

I’m interested in the trend of stud earrings that have become known as 'front and back earrings'. The back of them is also designed, usually to hang down behind the ear. I really love this innovative idea. These earrings from Laonato on Etsy are my current favourites At the moment I am collecting some images using pinterest (an obsession of mine!) so do have a look!  Have you bought a pair of these? Have you made any like these? And let me know in the comments your favourite pair of front and back earrings Follow Anna's board Innovative and unusual earrings on Pinterest. Let's stay in touch! Reblog - a brief guide to selling jewellery online

It's jewellery business week at the London Jewellery School and I have written a few blog posts for them. This is a reblog of one, the original can be found here They are running a discount on their business courses this week, 20% off bookings made by 28th February (bookings can be made on any available course for the whole of 2015). For the discount email or phone One of my absolute favourite things is to wake up and find I’ve made a sale in my sleep! It is so satisfying. The options for selling your work, however, can be a bit daunting so here is a brief guide to selling jewellery online. Firstly, you need to decide on your approach. I’m just starting out If you want to test the waters and see how your jewellery sells I would recommend starting out selling through a website like etsy , folksy , misi , dawanda These sites have differing costs and take a percentage of your sales so you will need to research which is best for you. New stock at the pop up shop!

I am currently selling my sweetie jewellery in a pop up shop in Camden Lock market for We Make London . I have decided to stay selling in the shop until after christmas as the sales have been pretty promising. As part of the agreement for selling there each maker has to work in the shop for two days of the month. This week I took in some new items and a new display stand. My new sweetie jars! They fit the sweetie bracelets perfectly and make a great stocking filler. I'm currently only stocking them in the shop as they are heavy to post. Some new felt ball bracelets (the felt balls are attached to a silver plated chain and the clasp is a silver plated t-bar). I've also added some new felt earrings in different colours Hopefully sales will continue to be good. Do pop in and browse in the shop if you're in London!

Felt bangle

Felt bangle by Rebecca's Emporium on Etsy I've been awol for a bit, sorry about that. It's been pretty hairy at work for a few weeks. Anyway, I spent today firing jewellery and doing a bit of enamelling. It's a bit dark for photos but I'll give it a go tomorrow. What I wanted to tell you about is this fab bangle I bought. I got it through a BNR on Etsy last weekend from Rebecca's Emporium . I am so pleased with it, it's really striking. I have problems with buying bangles but Rebecca made it larger. Rebecca's Emporium on Etsy This is from the same shop and I think it is rather cute as well. And I also got a sale from the BNR which was great!

Introducing some brand new designs

I've been making and have finally got round to listing some new products I've had for a few weeks. All bracelets! Sweet shop range Firstly, some additions to my sweet shop! My original  licorice allsort bracelet has been my best seller and sold to the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and the US. I decided to do a new version for those that have a favourite colour. You can choose between brown, pink or orange. I've had these flumps beads for a while and have finally made them into a fabulously kitsch pastel bracelet . Perfect for your summer wardrobe. It goes really well with those blush tones that are really big at the moment. Charm bracelets I have also added more charm bracelets after I had some success with them in the past. She sells sea shells charm bracelet Pink crystal flower charm bracelet Butterflies flutter by charm bracelet I hope there's something here you like!

Trying out a BNR!

Licorice allsorts necklace I've had a very busy weekend of jewellery making with beads. I had a great commission from a colleague at work to make a licorice allsort necklace, earrings and a love hearts necklace and earrings.  I love the chain of the love hearts necklace, it's the heart link silver chain I bought at Hatton Garden this week. Love Hearts silver necklace I am also in a BNR for the first time! BNR stands for Buy 'N Replace (or buy now replace). Basically, there is a page of sixteen shops on Etsy. If you buy something from one of those sixteen shops you replace the shop you buy from. It is a good idea as many people who make handmade items like to buy them. I bought a brooch I had my eye on anyway from 7071 designs . So, I bought in on Saturday and then started making more items. We managed to photograph them this morning with the help of some rare sunlight! And then I was able to list nine new pieces (it was a very busy Saturday!). I sold this silver l...

Social media

This week I have been focussing on my social media. I currently work in technology but I am aware that many artists and crafters don't have the confidence or the know-how to use the internet to help to promote and sell their work. I am looking at putting together a course in social media specifically for artists and crafters. So, I decided to make sure I was up to scratch on everything before trying to tell other people what to do! In the wonderful world of the internet - this week I have Re-listed some items on Etsy Joined some teams on Etsy Set up my lightboat twitter account (I already use twitter but I wanted an account specifically for the jewellery). Search for light_boat to follow me Added my twitter feed to my blog (I do love a widget!) Joined network blogs. Now I'm following some fantabulous inspiring blogs (you can follow me by clicking on the button - scroll down a bit, it's on the right of the screen!) Started a facebook fan page for Light boat Jewellery Added a...

The story so far!

I now have two etsy shops set up. One for selling vintage brooches Camden Vintage And one set up to sell my handmade jewellery Lightboat Pluses I have had one of my vintage brooches featured in a treasury One person has hearted the Lightboat shop I set up a treasury on etsy that I was pleased with Thoughts on Camden Vintage I am yet to sell anything but I have only listed once for each shop so I have to keep that in mind! I'm not sure if the vintage pieces will be worthwhile. I wonder if they are too expensive. They came from Camden Passage Market and are genuinely lovely pieces but I'm not sure if the demand is there. I am considering using the pieces to embellish hand knitted scarves or handmade bags so I've not given up! Plus, as I said, I've only listed once so I may try and relist to see if there is more interest. Thoughts on lightboat I have a real butterfly brain! My thoughts keep fluttering around. I keep getting loads of ideas and I don't concentrate on fin...
