Always learning

This blog post was first published for the London Jewellery School blog . I have made a few slight changes here. I met my first serious boyfriend at university when I did my undergraduate degree. Among other things he called me a ‘paper chaser’, someone who loves the validation of a certificate. We split up years ago when I had one degree. I do now have five so maybe he had a point. As a tutor at the London Jewellery School , teaching beginners and intermediate classes, I am rather obsessed with continual betterment (I suspect you didn’t need to live with me for six years to work that one out). I am one of ten people in the world (so far) to achieve the higher diploma in metal clay at the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery. I also have qualifications in both of the main metal clay brands, Art Clay and PMC. While it’s true that I do like a certificate, it’s mostly because it is proof of attainment of a certain level of skill. More important to me than the piece of paper is to ...

Learning from the masters!

I have been very fortunate to be able to attend masterclasses in metal clay with a number of fantastic artists. I spend a large proportion of my income on doing this as it is my passion and I know that by spending a couple of days with someone you learn so much more than you ever will from a book (although I love books too!) I am now looking at the masterclasses for 2014 (I'll write about those in a future post!) but I thought I would think over what the artists I have studied with so far have taught me. Not just techniques as there have been too many of those to list, but a general ethos to inspire and inform my work. Julia Rai is a British metal clay artist, fantastic teacher and director at the Cornwall School of Arts Craft and Jewellery . She was the first person in the world to achieve Metal Clay Masters registry level 4 (there are 5 levels). I have taken five accredited courses with her and have learnt more every time. I think the main thing I have taken from studyin...

My own thanksgiving

Milk chocolate fondue from Haagen Dazs A year ago I decided to start a diary of goals and to log things I've done related to my creativity. I chose thanksgiving to start this as it is a well known date but as I'm not American it means nothing to me specifically so it was great to create my own day around it. This week I took a day off work as my thanksgiving day. I travelled into London (I do this every day so it's not a big deal!) and went for lunch. I sat and read my diary over lunch. I wrote a summary of what I've achieved started teaching at the London Jewellery School completed my PGDip in Academic Practice with a merit won best paper presentation for the second year in a row at my university was commissioned to make jewellery for well known people had a piece of jewellery worn by an actress in a BBC interview was a co-author for a published journal article attended a masterclass run by Terry Kovalcik and learnt to make a box pendant learnt how ...

Recommending Craftcast

Craftcast There are a number of really excellent online resources now for learning to craft. I really want to recommend Alison Lee's Craftcast . I have now purchased two recordings from Craftcast and have subscribed to the free podcast via itunes. You can also virtually attend classes and then ask questions as you would in any class. I haven't done this yet because the time difference has meant that they are normally in the middle of the night for me here in the UK! I do know that some students from the UK and Europe do virtually attend the live sessions but I am happy with the recordings and a good nights sleep! It is so great to be able to get real value out of them, they are packed full of hints and tips. I love that I can  download them, unlike some online services, and watch them as many times as I like! Being able to watch it again may make it better than physically attending a real class! The two recordings I have purchased (so far!) are Copyright Donna Penoyer...
