Entrepreneurship in the creative sector - a talk by award winning director Jessica Rose

This week Jessica Rose , award winning director of the London Jewellery School , gave a talk on Entrepreneurship in the creative sector. Unfortunately I missed the talk (I had a ticket to a really fantastic concert!) but thankfully the Jewellery School recorded the talk so I didn't miss out. Definitely worth a watch.

Rio Rewards PMC certification - I passed!

I am very proud to say that this week I took and passed the Rio Rewards PMC certification (PMC stands for precious metal clay). It was run in the UK for the first time ever - it had previously only ever been taught in the States. The three day course was taught by Patrik Kusek at the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery . On the course we had to make seven pieces to the correct standard - a pen, two pairs of earrings, two rings, a tetrahedron and a carved pendant. It was a lot to get done in the time but I learnt a great deal from Patrik and my fellow students on the course. By passing the Rio certification I also achieved the Higher Diploma in Metal Clay from the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery. I am very happy that these two dreams have finally been realised and I feel I can really develop my skills with metal clay now.

Inaugural London Jewellery meetup

Last night I attended the first London Jewellery meetup in a pub near Hatton Garden. The inaugural speaker was the fantastic Shaun Leane whose talk was entitled 'From workbench to worldwide'. He was very generous with his knowledge, advice and experience and answered all our questions honestly. The London Jewellery meetup group is free to join and has been created to help new and existing jewellers network and collaborate. The plan is for a monthly meetup with a different speaker each time. Do sign up (it's free to join and attend!) and get notification of future events.

Learning from the best - Anna Mazon

Copyright Anna Mazon 2013 This weekend I was so fortunate to be able to attend a metal clay masterclass from Anna Mazon . Anna is a Saul Bell Award finalist for 2013 and I have admired her beautiful work for a long time, so when I heard she was going to be teaching the Herbarium pendant class at Lynne Glazzard's studio in Yorkshire I jumped at the chance. Her pieces look even more stunning in the flesh. The detail and precision of this tiny work is amazing. Anna Mazon demonstrating The class was two days long and we worked at a good pace, first designing our pendant and template, making the piece for the stone and learning to make vines. On the second day we finished decorating our pendants with leaves, flowers and acorns - all under Anna's expert guidance. At lunchtime the pieces were fired and we then worked on the bezel setting for the stone.    Lynne Glazzard's studio in North Yorkshire was wonderful. The setting in the dales was beautiful and the studio

Free jewellery tutorial for the London Jewellery School

I have been working on my first ever tutorial for the London Jewellery School ! The London Jewellery School has a free projects page with different tutorials written by teachers on the staff. I have been thinking of writing one for ages but finally got it finished! It is for a French knit necklace like the one pictured. I'm not sure when the step by step project will be published but I'll let you know as soon as it is!
