Lights, camera, action!

I've been very busy over the last couple of weeks with an increase in jewellery sales plus a very exciting project for Jewellery School online . I have been filming a tutorial that will be available to purchase and view online! The tutorial is for three metal clay stone setting projects, all of which can be torch fired. They include setting a fireable stone, setting dichroic glass and setting a bezel cup. The filming was done by a film crew and I had three cameras on me! Here is a photo of my view of the crew in action. The footage is being edited at the moment and will be available to purchase alongside other new tutorials for the website and I'll blog about it when they are finished and ready to buy. I'm filming another one next week so busy busy busy!

Stone setting in silver clay

Sapphire and fine silver ring made by me! Many jewellery makers haven’t heard of silver clay. It is a moldable material made from silver particles, an organic binder and a bit of water. Once the clay is dry it can be fired with a torch or in a kiln to burn away the binder to leave silver. It is a flexible way of working with silver and I’m often asked if stones can be pressed into the clay and fired. Sadly it’s not as simple as that! However, there are some stones that can be set and fired in the clay and here is some advice about using these. Cubic zirconia Cubic zirconia are manmade stones that come in different shapes, sizes and colours. They are a very flexible stone for silver clay as they can be fired in place, both with a torch or in a kiln. Hints You do need to be w...

Ring making in silver clay

Today I have been on a course at Craftworx , a jewellery studio in Yorkshire, being taught by Tracey Spurgin. She is running a two day ring making course using silver clay. Today is day one and we have made two different types of rings, one with a dichroic glass cabochon (you can see that in the right hand photo, mine is the bottom left ring) and another with a D profile ring band and a flower on top. We have been concentrating hard and our pieces are now in the kiln to fire. I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out!
