October is a very busy month for me! After teaching my first residential course last week I was teaching at The Big Bead Show in Sandown Park, Esher this week for the London Jewellery School ! For some reason I've never been before. It is a bit of a walk from the station with all my kit but soon I was there and jumping the queue that had already formed outside, waiting to get in! My workshop space was at the other end of the large exhibition area so I was able to see everyone setting up their stalls with all their sparkly wares! I went up to the workshop space to set up. It had a very expansive view of the racecourse. I was able to set up quickly, chat with Alison Tarry, the tutor teaching the workshop next door to me and even managed to get a cup of tea before we got started! I'm pleased (and slightly daunted!) to be telling you that this is my last term of teaching in London for a while. My husband and I are moving to Edinburgh at easter and I plan to be teaching in Scotland this year! I will also be returning to London to do some teaching but it will be shorter courses. Students should be interested and inspired by using beads to create interesting and innovative pieces of jewellery. Examples of beading by beginners I invite you to join my Beautiful Beading class at the Mary Ward Centre , Holborn, London on Mondays 3-5.30pm. During the class, which is suitable for beginners and improvers, you will learn how to make earrings, including shaping your own earring wires bracelets - using different materials and multi-stranded bracelets necklaces lariats We will also look at design and inspiration and you will have the opportunity to work on your own projects with my support. The Mary Ward Centre is a lovely place to learn and classes are very affordable for those on a budget. The course fee includes tuition and findings (wire, stringing materials, use of tools etc). It also includes beads for the first few weeks of class. You will then be advised about the projects and be able to purchase your own beads in your own choice of colours. The latest book gives us even more - 1000 beads . Beads have been made and worn for at least 40,000 years with many beautiful examples being found at archaeological digs. I taught a new weekend class at the Mary Ward Centre last month. It was Introduction to chainmaille jewellery . It was a fun class run over two Saturdays. It was popular so I will also be teaching a weekly daytime class in Chainmaille and beaded jewellery starting on Monday 12th May, 3-5.30pm ending on Monday 14th July. Classes do not run on bank holidays. The class is available for enrollment by phone on 020 7269 6000 (the centre is closed from 7th April - 21st April so there will be no answer during those times) . The course description is not currently on the website so if you are interested in enrolling please check after 21st April when the centre re-opens. It's been a really busy teaching month for me. It goes like that. The college I work at is closed for most of April so I have to make hay while the sun shines! Here are some pieces made by students on the intermediate beading class at the Mary Ward Centre . They're really enjoying the class and will be back next term for chainmaille and beading.

I was asked to write a step by step jewellery making tutorial by the London Jewellery School . It is now available for free on their blog! It was good fun to do but I found it difficult to photograph as the tiger tail (cord) that I was using is so fine. In the end I used wool in most of the photographs to make sure it was clear what the steps were. My boyfriend Gary from Crafty websites did the photography and I think they have come out very well. Some beads ready for a demo! I was fortunate to work for a day at the Knit and Stitch show at Alexandra Palace this month. Although it wasn't for jewellery makers specifically most people there were interested in a lot of different crafts. I hadn't been before and had a good browse around (and, OK yes, a little bit of buying!). I was demonstrating jewellery making for the London Jewellery School , showing some of the techniques that you can learn on our classes. It was the first day of the show and a week day but was still pretty busy so we had plently of people to talk to! I really enjoyed the day.
