Exciting commissions

I feel like I haven't posted on the blog for a while - sorry about that! I have been really busy with some very exciting commissions. First of all, I was commissioned to make a pendant for a British TV and film actress! I shall discretely not name names! I made this bee pendant which was thankfully very well received.
It was made using silver clay. I made a silicone mould of a bee using a bead that I had. I textured the back and front of the pendant with netting to make it look like a honeycomb.
The bee is a symbol of achieving the impossible and I will be adding this to my Etsy shop soon

I was then also commissioned to make some cufflinks for another famous person! I was specifically asked to write 'Crazy Arnold' on them. I used a photopolmer plate to create a mould of the letters and set them in silver clay. After kiln firing I soldered on the cufflink backs. I found this article from Art Clay Guild UK chairman Nicola Callow really helpful when soldering onto silver clay; thanks for sharing your tips Nicola.
The cufflinks were very well received and I subsequently was asked to make more jewellery for this recipient!

I am really pleased with these pendants that were commissioned for twins Grace and Stella's birthday. I designed them myself and they are an amigram. When worn one way up they say Grace and when worn the other way up they say Stella. I added a silver initial letter to each piece, a G for Grace and an S for Stella, so they could tell whose was whos (that can't be seen in the photo as they were added to the lobster claw clasp).

So all in all, January was a very busy month! I hope February is as busy!

Silver clay on the BBC

If you are reading this blog then you probably already know that I make jewellery with a material called metal clay. It's not a well known material so I was really pleased to see it featuring on a programme on BBC1. The programme is called Countryfile and a metal clay artist called Emma Mitchell was featured, interviewed by Anita Rani. Emma talked about the mental health benefits of getting out into the countryside and getting inspiration from nature and natural surroundings. They picked leaves and other natural materials and used them to make moulds and silver jewellery. It's fantastic that silver clay was featured on TV as it raises awareness of the material. The metal clay world is quite small but I haven't met Emma yet although she is also teaching at the Y ou Can Make It metal clay conference in March so I am looking forward to meeting her there. You can watch the programme here on the BBC iplayer until 6th March 2018 (but only if you're in the UK unfortun

Business matters article for Making Jewellery magazine

As part of my role for the London Jewellery School I've been writing the Business Matters column in Making Jewellery magazine for six months now. We've been doing an interview series with jewellers on different aspects of jewellery business. However, this month I am actually featured! I wrote an article on getting press coverage which would be relevant for all small businesses. The magazine is available from Smiths and larger supermarkets so do check it out! It's issue 116, March 2018. This image is shared with permission, copyright GMC publications
